Mastering sub-floor preparation & wet room installation - 3 day course
Course Overview:
This practical and knowledge-rich 3-day course is designed for flooring installers looking to develop their skills and confidence in sub-floor preparation and wetroom vinyl installation. With a mix of hands-on training and guided theory, this course deep-dives into industry best practices, British Standards, and real-world room installation scenarios.
Day 1: Sub-Floor Assessment & Preparation Techniques
- Identification of common sub-floor types (timber, concrete, asphalt, etc.)
- Understanding the impact of sub-floor condition on final finishes
- Overview of relevant British Standards for sub-floor prep and wet room installation
- Moisture testing: demonstration and hands-on use of:
- Hygrometers
- Tramex meters
- Hood test systems
- Application of Damp Proof Membranes (DPM's) — sheet and liquid systems
- Working with Liquid Screeds – preparation and key considerations
- Repairing cracks and surface defects
- Priming methods for various substrates
- Mixing and applying smoothing & levelling compounds
Day 2: Vinyl Installation Techniques & Cap and Cove Systems
- Overview of adhesive types: selection based on environment & vinyl type
- Application techniques: trowel sizes, open times, and common errors
- Tools of the trade: from weld trimmers to groovers
- Safety and PPE considerations for installers
- Setting out a room for vinyl installation
- Installation of cove former & capping strips in corners and transitions
- Substrate prep for secure bonding of profiles
- Tools and adhesives for cap and cove applications
- Templating vinyl for complex areas (alcoves, pillars, and small enclosures)
- Sheet vinyl coving: correct methods for internal & external mitres
- Welding vinyl seams: hot air welding techniques and tips
Day 3: Full Wet room Installation & Advanced Scenario
- Step-by-step wet room installation in mock room setup:
- Cap & cove install
- Vinyl sheet lay and trimming
- Seam welding and finishing
- Troubleshooting real-life installation challenges
Course outcomes:
- Understand how to identify and prepare a range of sub-floors to British Standards
- Be confident in using moisture testing and levelling equipment
- Be able to complete a full cap and cove vinyl wetroom installation, including welding and templating
- Know how to select the right adhesives, tools, and methods for long-lasting installations
